Rototom Sunsplash is celebrating 20th anniversary!

The 20th aniversary of one of the most relaxed reggae festivals in Europe will take place from the 17.8.- 24.8. in the Spanish seaside resort of Benicàssim. While in 2009 it seemed to be a complete demise of this international event, after years of prosperity and the expansion of the Festival to gargantuan proportions (7 days, up to 100 thousand guests) in the North of Italy, the ranks of the newly elected Italian ruling class, gave a clear NO to the gathering. Organizers didn´t give up and found a new home in Spain. Benicàssim is situated 60 km north of Valencia. What can we expect from one of the world’s biggest reggae festivals this year? The Festival will consist of 5 main stages (Main, Dancehall, Dub, Showcase, Ska) and dozens of other events with smaller stages. For Example. Sun Beach is an afternoon program of music and dance on the main beach, African Village, Roots Yard, Reggae University (lectures on the topic of rasta culture, reggae music, sound system, etc.).

On the main stage we will have among others Jamaican legends Israel Vibration, John Holt, Misty In Roots, Leroy Sibbles, U Roy, and especially Third World, who will be celebrating a respectable 40 years since its inception right on the opening day of the Festival. Dancehall fans will enjoy Busy Signal, Mr. Vegas, Cecile, Wayne Marshall or Gyptian. Last but not least from the Jamaican representatives we have Protoje, Richie Spice and Anthony B. Europe will be represented by Alborosie, Dub Inc., Africa Unite, Sud Sound System, or Spanish Morodo. And the main star of the closing day of Rototom will be Damian Marley. This is by the way his only appearance this year in Europe!

Dancehall stage has an incredible lineup every year. This year’s madness in the morning will come with Black Chiney, Poison Dart, Renaissance, Rory Stone Love, Mighty Crown, Sentinel, Herb-A-Lize It and many others. There will be a heavy clash of generations between Ricky Trooper VS. Tony Matterhorn. Also Dub station will host names such as Channel One, Zion Train, Jah Tubby´s, Ranking Joe, Thunda Clap or Vibronics. The Showcase stage will be featuring the stars of tomorrow, Kabaka Pyramid, Iba Mahr, Exco Levi and even Lion D. What else to add? Maybe just take some days off on the third week of August …
